The cost of child care for infants and toddlers is out of reach for many working Florida parents.

In Hillsborough County, data shows that infant care can cost as much as $12,000 a year. Pre-kindergarten care in the county can cost upwards of $8,000 annually, according to the latest community needs assessment conducted by the Early Learning Coalition.

Santa Rosa eyes 435-acre woodland for hiking, camping, canoeing, and preservation

Santa Rosa County is poised to enter into a purchase agreement to obtain 435 acres of woodland property just west of Naval Air Base Whiting Field that will be conserved and utilized for passive recreation.

Clear Creek runs through the Pace-area property and its prominent feature is a 37-acre natural lake.

The county will actually take possession of the lake property without spending anything for it. The U.S. Navy will utilize $1.5 million in Readiness and Environmental Protection Integration funds to cover half of the acquisition cost. Another $1.5 million will come from a defense infrastructure grant.

ORLANDO, Fla. — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis this week directed the state’s universities to make it easier for out-of-state students facing antisemitism and other religious harassment in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war to transfer to Florida campuses.

DeSantis’ directive on Tuesday piggybacks on blowback some Ivy League leaders have faced in response to how they’re handling antisemitism and anti-Israel protests on their campuses. The governor’s office said there has been an increase in inquiries about transferring, without providing any numbers to back that up.
